The Spirit and the Advantage of Absence
In this sermon Pastor Mark South teaches from John 16:4–15 that Jesus’ departure is actually for the disciples’ advantage because the Holy Spirit now continues Christ’s ministry everywhere: convicting the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8–11), guiding believers into truth (John 16:12–13), and glorifying Christ above all else (John 16:14–15). Framed by Jesus’ warnings that disciples will be hated, rejected, and sorrowful (John 15:18–19; 16:2, 20, 33), the sermon calls the church to take heart in Christ’s victory, trust the Spirit’s convicting mercy, and live as faithful witnesses while the Spirit does the inner work only He can do, echoing that no one can truly confess Jesus as Lord apart from the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:1–3).
