Similar to the greatest salvation event of Old Testament history - where God showed His
sovereign rule over the Red Sea in order to redeem His people - Jesus shows that the saving
power of God is revealed in and through Him, and access to that salvation is by faith alone.
We are also shown once again how hard-hearted, how blind not only the twelve disciples, but
disciples today, can be to the identity and authority of Jesus. With shock and confusion, the
Lord’s disciples respond to His revelation with the question, “Who then is this?”
Mark’s answer has been clear since the first chapter: this is “Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Since
this is true, and this passage proves it all the more, our only proper response is to repent and
believe the good news about Him
